Can you learn to speak ‘Hip Hop’ by listening to popular music? Results from recent research, published in December, 2011 by Paula Chelsey of the University of Alberta, support the hypothesis that non-African-American young adults learn African-American English (AAE) vocabulary through listening to hip-hop. How surprising are these results? Vocabulary Acquisition Through Hip Hop MusicChelsey questions whether vocabulary acquisition can occur through listening to music, particularly hip-hop or rap, since listeners often misunderstand lyrics, and transcribe lyrics words incorrectly. Added problems listeners face that Chelsey lists are:
- Album covers often lack lyrics.
- Background music obscures words.
- The fast pace and voice quality of the music make it difficult to understand.
- The unfamiliar language used may contribute to errors in interpretation.
Chelsey claims that these factors create excruciatingly difficult conditions for lyric comprehension, transcription, and vocabulary acquisition, and suggests listening to Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis,” 2011, in order to appreciate the complexity involved in comprehending the lyrics of this genre of music. |

DLO creates an instrumental hip-hop series in his basement
A rapper's gentler side
Scott Gordon on Thursday 01/19/2012
Rapper DLO, real name Bradley Thomas, is one of Madison's strongest hip-hop voices. That's thanks in part to his work with dumate, the hip-hop band that released We Have the Technology in 2009. Thomas also pairs with producer Man Mantis as IceMantis and helps fellow dumate MC Laduma Nguyuza produce the James Baldwin-inspired Billie James Project.
But Thomas, 34, does some of his best work when he retreats alone to the basement of his east-side house. He released his first solo instrumental hip-hop album, Pempstrumentals, in 2009, sequencing mostly one-minute tracks that simulated the busy-minded flow of a J. Dilla or Madlib mix. Pempstrumentals has become a series, with music that's distinctly different from DLO's output as a rapper.
On the mike, DLO embodies a blunt masculinity but also explores the MC as an adult, rapping about being a provider and even helping kids with their math homework. Pempstrumentals, on the other hand, finds that grownup trying to unwind and explore a gentler side. Says DLO, "My rapping style and my producing style, it's almost like I'm bipolar."
DLO released two installments in 2011. Pempstrumentals III: The J&R Files honors the long history of hip-hop producers mining jazz music, while Pempstrumentals IV: Photosynthesis takes the series to its height so far, as Thomas gets bolder in his use of synth hooks and weaves samples into denser and fuller compositions. The fifth installment is due later this year, and dumate is also working on new tracks. |

Drake Doubles Up Again in R&B/Hip-Hop Top 10
by Karinah Santiago | January 19, 2012 9:27 EST rake earns his 22nd top 10 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as "The Motto" (featuring Lil Wayne), the anthem that preaches the way of the Young Money assemblage, jumps 13-9. The song earns the Greatest Gainer/Airplay award with an increase of 3.5 million audience impressions, with WHTA (Hot 107.9) Atlanta contributing the largest single-station bump with an increase of 500,000 impression (up 31 spins week-to-week), according to Nielsen BDS. "Motto" -- a bonus track on his "Take Care" set -- is one of two titles from that deluxe album in this week's top 10 (and the fourth thus far). His effort with Nicki Minaj, "Make Me Proud," holds at No. 2 and is one of three songs the female rapper is featured on in the top 10. Lil Wayne, the ubiquitous featured act on "Motto," gains his 28th top 10, seven of which have been joint efforts with Drake. Weezy's top 10 count breaks a tie he held with Jay-Z, moving him into second place among rap acts for the most top 10s in the history of the 70-year old chart. Ludacris is the top 10 leader among the rap pack with 29. "Lotus Flower Bomb," Wale's chart-topping love rap, remains at No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a fifth consecutive week, with its audience impressions remaining flat at 33 million, 1 million ahead of Drake and Minaj's "Proud." |

The Hip Hop Week In Review: 1/8/2012 - 1/14/2012
by STEVEN J. HOROWITZ
Jay-Z becomes a father, while Common takes his beef with Drake to another level. French Montana also revealed that he almost signed with Kanye West.
This week, Jay-Z became father to baby Blue Ivy Carter after his wife Beyonce checked into a New York City, New York hospital. The song “Glory,” released only two days after Blue’s birth and featuring her very own voice on the track, commemorated the experience and made B.I.C. the youngest person to place on the Billboardcharts. Meanwhile, Common steered his career into beef country, releasing a remix to Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin” that ruffled the Hip Hop community’s feathers. And to cap it off, French Montana spoke with HipHopDX about almost signing with Kanye West and the type of creative control he’ll have working with Diddy’s Bad Boy Records.
Jay-Z Becomes A Father, Releases “Glory” Featuring Blue Ivy Carter
Jay-Z and Beyonce became proud parents this week. Bey checked into New York City, New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital last Saturday and brought their baby Blue Ivy Carter into the world. Hov celebrated the event by recording his daughter’s cries and tacking it onto the end of his song “Glory,” produced by The Neptunes and mixed by Mike Dean. The move made her the youngest person to ever place on the Billboard charts. The power couple later released a statement thanking fans for their support during this time. But Jigga man’s work life continued on, with the announcement of a partnership with Duracell to serve as spokesman for the brand and a nomination for the 2012 BRIT Awards alongside Kanye West.

Sup folks! Its ya man, The Big Bad Black Man aka GI Bro (I get the job done) aka Chuck Claps Jr in the place to be. This installment, Ima piss off alot of folks out there. But fuck it, my blog, blow me if you dont like it. Anyways, we gonna be talking about alot of your favorite rappers and how they put me to sleep. Im not hating, but these niggas.. they lack whatever it is to keep me interested in their music. I go to their shows and be bored and shit nah mean? Doing my taxes, planning my week out and shit while Im at these niggas shows. Anyways lets into the list
1) Joel Ortiz: I tried. I really did. I even went to a show of his. This cat just isnt all that interesting. I know he from Brooklyn and he spanish. But this nigga is CORNY. None of his joints are memorable or like super hot. I mean, he wack. Like for real. I skip his parts on Slaughterhouse all day. No one wanna here no heavy set wack Rican cat from the BK rap about nothing. I was at his show with my dude Farahani da Don and I was bored. I went to the bathroom. Grab a drink. Cop a few numbers from the drunk white "hip hoppers" women and turn to one and was like damn, this nigga still rapping? You know its bad when you gotta ask that. Stop rapping nigga.
2) Wiz Khalifa: Honestly, his mixtapes are dope and I still bump "Get In My Car" once and a while on my show: http://blogtalkradio.com/onblast (check me out!) but his album, SNOOZEFEST. For one, Im sick of these skinny ass rappers. Infact, FUCK ALL YOU SKINNY ASS RAPPERS! But thats another blog topic. Second, this nigga looks like Jar Jar Binks with road maps all over him. Third, he a sucka for love. How you gonna tat a known slore on ya body son? Is that what you trying to teach the youth of today? To fall in love with these smuts cuz they give up the pum pum? Rolling Papers? More like Toilet Papers. Complete utter trash. I wasnt even that big on "Black and Yellow" (fuck the Steelers. Yea I said that, come see me). He's not as bad as ya boy Ortiz but.. he's good if I need good nap.
3) J Cole: Is this cat ever EVER gonna put his album out? Tell you the truth, I see why Jigga hasnt put this cat out yet. He hasnt made a hot song is a long time. He's run out of subject matter. Ok, we know you were a dork before you got put on. Ok we know the hoes wasnt hollering before you got put on. Ok we know you spit hot fire and you're a dweeb from NC. We get it. Anything else Mr Cole? No? STOP RAPPING. All ya mixtapes sound the same man. Rap about I dunno, ANYTHING ELSE. Please. Hopefully when his album drops, we can wow us but for now, do something to get a buzz for yourself. Slap a DJ or something. Simba... FUCK OUTTA HERE. The real Simba aint soft. At all.
4) B.O.B: This corny mothafucka. Just look at him. I bet you my Grandma who is 92 can go up and take this loser lunch money. I wasnt feeling this cat. At all. None of that Airplanes or that Bruno Mars shit. And fuck ya guitar nigga. Who you think you is? Wyclef? FUCK OUTTA HERE. I lose all credibility for this clown when I found out he didnt even write the songs. Lame. I dont got much to say about this fool. Stop rapping. Thanks
Yo... dont this cat look like Freiza from Dragonball Z? Ol let me power up and destroy the universe ass nigga. Ol Ima kill all the Sayians ass nigga. Goku styled on you!
5) Big Sean: Look at him. He even yawning on himself. This cat right here. BORING. I was a fan but I heard the album and fell asleep for about 3 hours. First off, he fighting with his girlfriend Drake over a flow or style thats has been used for DECADES. Second, he's rhymes are pre-school at best. I cant fuck with this cat. Nah. Lame. Shit Im falling asleep talking about this cat. Moving on. 6) Lloyd Banks: Forget the punchlines. Forget the sleepy voice. Infact, thats why he's on this list. Once he ran out of punchlines, he is a pretty boring rapper. See I love Tony Yayo. Not because he is the best lyricist of the G Unit. Yayo has character and ignorance all over his records. He got energy. This cat, all he had was punchlines and he aint even got that no more. So, yup, that Hunger For More 2, more like Slumber For Me. So yea there you go. All these wack corny mothafuckas make me go night night. Any questions? Spare me. You cant convince me these cats are hot. Now, Ima go take a nap. Peace |

The Big Bad Black Man's Celebrity Beefs Vol 2: Neeyo
Sup folks! Its ya man, The Big Bad Black Man aka Chuck Claps Jr aka No Bitch I Aint Paying For That Are You Out Ya Damn Mind Do You Think Im Charity Bitch This Aint Unicef. Im back with another of my celebrity beef, this time with this super dome ass nigga Neeyo. This nigga. I don't like this chump. As a person, organization or a crew. His songs are wack, no one wants to see some bobble headed nigga prancing and dancing.
Anyways, Im chilling on the lanes with my dude, Jesse aka the Fist Of God when this lame comes through. Now me, Im a bold mothafucka at times. I like to call people out on their bullshit. Now this was around the time Young Berg was catching Ls like they were going out of style. Mr Neeyo over here said he would 3 finger slap Mr Berg. So I asked him on it. He gonna act like he don't understand english all of sudden. Then he cops a attitude. So my man, The Fist Of God comes over and was like is there a problem. See this is where I save Neeyo's life cuz when my dude Fist Of God thinks its a problem, it gets solved. With his fist. Cuz you know, they take lives. I think he told me one time, he was bored, he punched a hole into time itself because it was looking at him wrong. Or he could be just crazy. Look I dunno, all I know is I try to stay on his good side. Cuz I like my life. I like my life unpunched. Anyways once Neeyo took a glaze at the mountains my man calls hands, his english came back. He knew what time it was. Chin Check time nah mean. He grabbed his stuff, thanked whatever God he praises for not letting the Fist GOD anoint him. Neeyo, if you reading this, WATCH YA NECK NIGGA.
Anyways next story, will about my beef with Jazzy Pha aka the fat man trapped in a polo. |

| The Best of The Last Generation of HIP HOP |
|
Run–D.M.C.

Run–D.M.C. was an American hip hop group from Hollis, Queens, New York. Founded by Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, and Jason "Jam-Master Jay" Mizell. The group is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture.
Run–D.M.C. were one of the most well-known hip hop acts in the 1980s, who along with LL Cool J, signified the advent of the new school of hip hop music. They were the first group in the genre to have agold record and be nominated for a Grammy Award.[1] The group was among the first to highlight the importance of the MC and DJ relationship.[2][3] In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them number 48 in their list of the greatest musical artists of all time.[3]
In 2007, Run–D.M.C. was named "The Greatest Hip Hop Group of All Time" by MTV.com[4] and "Greatest Hip Hop Artist of All Time" by VH1.[5] On April 4, 2009, rapper Eminem inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In doing so, Run–D.M.C. became only the second hip hop group in history to be inducted, after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
The initials "D.M.C." are widely accepted to refer to Darryl McDaniels' initials.[citation needed] In the 1985 album King of Rock's title track, McDaniels says the initials have two meanings: "Devastating Mic Control" and "D for never dirty, MC for mostly clean." He also makes a third reference "The 'D's for Doing it all of the time, the 'M's for the rhymes that all are Mine, The 'C's for Cool - cool as can be."
Post-breakup
In 2004, Run-DMC were one of the first acts honored on the first annual VH1 Hip Hop Honors, alongside legends like 2Pac and the Sugarhill Gang. The Beastie Boys paid tribute. Simmons did not attend the show; he was recording his first solo album,Distortion. It was released in 2005 to strong reviews and moderate sales.[citation needed]
McDaniels also released a solo album, 'Checks Thugs and Rock N Roll', which was slightly less successful.[citation needed] He had recently discovered that he was adopted, which lead him to be the center of the VH1 program My Adoption Journey, a documentary chronicling his re-connection with his biological family. McDaniels was also featured in the 2008 video game, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, making appearances in the songs "Walk this Way" and "King of Rock". He frequently contributed to VH1 programs such as the I Love The... series, and he released the song "Rock Show" featuring singer Stephan Jenkins.
Simmons also turned to television, starring in Run's House, a reality show that followed his life as a father and husband. The show has become one of the most popular on MTV[citation needed], and it made reality TV stars out of his daughters Vanessa and Angela.
In June 2007, McDaniels appeared with Aerosmith performing "Walk This Way" for their encore at the Hard Rock Calling festival in London, England. Simmons joined Kid Rock's 2008 Rock N Roll Revival Tour, performing "It's Like That", "It's Tricky", "You Be Illin'", "Run's House", "Here We Go", "King of Rock" and "Walk This Way" with Kid Rock. In 2007, Mizell's wife, Terry, Simmons, and McDaniels also launched the J.A.M. Awards in Jay's memory. Jay's vision for social Justice, Arts and Music was promoted by many recording artists, including Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Raekwon, Jim Jones, M.O.P., Papoose, Everlast, DJ Muggs, Kid Capri, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, EPMD, Dead Prez, Biz Markie and Marley Marl. In October 2008, Mizell's one-time protege 50 Cent announced plans to produce a documentary about his fallen mentor.[22]
In 2008 Run–D.M.C. was nominated for 2009 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jadakiss
Jason Phillips (born May 27, 1975),[1] better known as Jadakiss, is an American rapper. He is a member of the groupThe LOX. (a member of the hip hop collective Ruff Ryders) Jadakiss is one of the three owners of the imprint known as D-Block. In early 2007, Jadakiss signed to Roc-a-Fella Records / Def Jam Records.
By the age of 16, Jadakiss was a freestyle rapper. He and some of his friends were given the opportunity to compete in the "Jack the Rapper Competition" in Florida, where Jadakiss had been noticed for his battle rap ability. He met Dee and Wah of the Ruff Ryders (then a management company), and began hanging out and battling outside of the Ruff Ryders' studio where artists such as DMX made their first hits.
Legal issues
In July 2004, Jadakiss was arrested in North Carolina on marijuana and gun-possession charges.[5][6] Several months later, he reached a plea agreement on misdemeanor charges and was ordered to pay a $900 fine.[6][7]
On October 7, 2006, Jadakiss was once again arrested in his hometown of Yonkers, New York, on gun and drug-possession charges.[6][8] A Yonkers Police Department spokesperson said Jadakiss was one of four men sitting in a 2006 Toyota Camry that was parked near the intersection of Nepperhan Avenue and Elm Street in Yonkers at around 5 a.m. Saturday. Officers said the vehicle's driver was behaving oddly and said they noticed a strong odor of marijuana while approaching the car. Inside the vehicle, police found a .38 caliber revolver that had been reported stolen. According to The Associated Press, the weapon was loaded.[6][8] All occupants were charged with possession of a stolen firearm; Jadakiss, was also charged with possession of marijuana (a small amount was found on his person).[6][8] The driver, Darnell Frazier, was charged with driving under the influence. The other two men in the vehicle are listed as Benjamin Lockhart and Kristian Smith. All were remanded to Westchester County Jail and were held until at least Tuesday of that year, when they were due in court.[8]
House raid
Police arrested two men on multiple felony charges, after they raided Jadakiss' Yonkers, New York apartment and found large amounts of heroin and marijuana.[9]According to police, multiple amounts of narcotics were discovered in the rapper's waterfront home.[9] The incident took place in morning of August 24, 2009.
Both men were reportedly in police custody and had been slapped with criminal charges.[9]
